Credible Art Websites

Since anybody can publish on the web, it is important to use authoritative or credible websites for your research.  Using the following reviewed websites and knowing how to evaluate websites yourself can help. 

  • Voice of the Shuttle
    Extensive site for the humanities.
  • ArtLex
    A dictionary of visual arts including pronunciation, diagrams, images, quotations and more links
  • Ask Art
    Includes art appraisals, art for sale, auction records and miscellaneous artists.

 Research Databases (Find articles, eBooks, and other resources)

  • Art Full Text
    Covers all aspects of art, including international and non-Western. Contains over 400 leading art journals, indexing from 1984, full text from 1997.
  • Oxford Art Online
    Contains full text articles on all aspects of art including biographies of artists and thier works. Please use wssurams as the username and password to access Oxford Art Online (formerly Grove Art Online) from off campus.
  • JSTOR
    Contains full-text scholarly articles dating from the 19th century. Most articles appear 2-5 years after publication. Includes all academic subjects including art.
  • Project Muse
    Provides full-text “scholarly” articles from the social sciences and humanities including art.
  • ProQuest Research Library
    Provides magazine, newspaper and scholarly journal articles in all areas of academic study including art. Indexing from 1971-present, full text varies by title.
  • Academic Search Premier
    Search for articles from all academic disciplines including art.
